Basil Lanneau Gildersleeve (October 23, 1831 – January 9, 1924), was a "classicist and Confederate apologist" (David Lupher and Elizabeth Vandiver, "Yankee She-Men and Octoroon Electra: Basil Lanneau Gildersleeve on Slavery, Race, and Abolition," 320), and one of the first faculty members hired at the founding of Johns Hopkins University in 1876.
