Westinghouse Fellowship and Chair, 1958-1985

 Series

Scope and Contents note

Series 3, Westinghouse Fellowship and Chair, dates from 1958 to 1985, with most of the documents dating prior to 1969. The Chair, held by Dr. Huggins, and the Fellowship were each supported by Westinghouse for two consecutive five year periods. The fellowship was to be given to one or two graduate students per year to finance their work towards a Ph.D. in solid state electronics; the recipients were obligated to work for Westinghouse during their first two summers of graduate study but were not obligated to work for the company after completing their degrees. The files in this series are of two general types: correspondence and other documents pertaining to the selection of the Westinghouse professor, and correspondence between the department and the Westinghouse Corporation negotiating the terms of the fellowship. The latter also includes a letter from the department giving a brief biographical sketch of each fellow and detailing their post-Hopkins accomplishments.
