Scope and Contents note

From the Sub-Series:

Series 15, subseries 1, Financial Office Subject Files, dates from 1915 to 1972, with the bulk of the material dating from the 1950s and 1960s. These files were maintained by the Treasurer's Office when it was responsible for all of the University's financial activities, including those that are now carried out by the Offices of the Senior Vice President, the Controller, the Vice President for Business Services, and Facilities Management. The wide scope of the office is reflected in the files, which concern not only investment policy, but also the management of campus affairs, the administration of grants and contracts, gifts to the University, and University-owned property. Particularly well documented are the beginning of the federal government's involvement with the University as a major source of research funding, the history of the Johns Hopkins Press and Broadway Management Corporation. There is also some material in these records relating to Henry Baker's service as secretary of the Board of Trustees, but his meeting notes and most of his correspondence are with the records of the board (RGN 01.001).

This subseries was created by the combination of two sets of alphabetical subject files, both dating back to the 1910s, with one ending in 1964 and the other in 1972, that were apparently the product of weeding a single series of records. Neither set was complete. In addition to the records of Treasurers W. Graham Boyce, S. Page Nelson, Henry Baker, and Bruce Partridge, this subseries contains records of Assistant Treasurer William Patterson, Controllers John H. Gilliece and William Applebaum, and Business Managers Wes Taylor and E. Maxwell Sauerwein.
