Biographical / Historical

Asger Oluf Jorn (1914-1973) was a Danish painter, sculptor, ceramic artist, and author. He was a founding member of the avant-garde movement COBRA and the International Situationist Movement, the latter of which tried to renew the Surrealist liaison between political and aesthetic thought and practice, presenting its ideas in the magazine Internationale situationniste (1958–1959). He was influential in shaping the ideas behind the May 1968 insurrections in France; quotes, phrases, and slogans from situationist texts and publications were ubiquitous on posters and graffiti throughout France during the uprisings. People like Jorn proposed to redesign cities so that they had separate bizarre, happy, sinister, tragic and useful quarters that people could drift in and out of. Jorn designed posters that were sold in support of the Paris student protest movements of May 1968. He resigned from the movement in 1961, devoting more and more time to a series of lavishly illustrated books on ancient Scandinavian art. He also continued to write many articles and several books, among them La Langue verte et la cuite (with Noël Arnaud; Paris, 1968), an illustrated parody of Claude Levi-Strauss. In his last years Jorn continued to build up a collection of his own work and that of his contemporaries and predecessors for the Silkeborg Kunstmuseum.
