Series 1: Posters, 1972-2009

 Series

Scope and Contents

The Poster series contains the principal output of Globe's printing operation: posters and signs printed on thin cardboard or coroplast, banners printed on large sheets of paper or canvas, and billboards printed on large paper panels to be pasted together on walls and other surfaces.

Please note that some posters reflect categories other than the one they were placed in due to the nature of the events they advertise; i.e. a music concert at a basketball game could be housed with either the performer’s musical genre or sports. It is also important to note that this series is presented here with only broad, top-level information, including the box number, poster genre, and the identifiers for posters found inside of each box.

In order to effectively locate posters within the collection and learn more metadata about particular poster sets, we recommend requesting use of the affiliated poster database, which will be linked to the collection when the final version becomes available. The database describes each poster at the item level and includes the following information about each poster, where applicable: recorded dates, event locations, politician names, location of the Globe warehouse where the poster was printed (if known), the printing styles determined to be used in the poster, and a large host of other thematic information such as the styles of music, type of event, and type of content featured in the poster. While basic series and subseries information is captured in this finding aid, there is also an attached glossary which describes how each poster descriptor was used so that one can quickly narrow down the location of a poster. Additional descriptors will be added in the future when possible.

Other Finding Aids

In order to effectively locate posters within the collection, we recommend using the database attached to the collection which includes the following information about each poster (if applicable): recorded dates, event locations, politician names, location of the Globe warehouse where the poster was printed (if known), the printing styles determined to be used in the poster, and other thematic information such as the styles of music, type of event, and type of content featured in the poster. While basic series and subseries information is captured in this finding aid, the database includes an associated glossary which describes how each poster descriptor was used so that one can quickly narrow down the location of a poster. Additional descriptors will be added in the future when possible. Please contact Sheridan Libraries Special Collections for more information.

Related Materials

At this time, the names of musicians and music groups, or other non-political figures, have not been recorded from posters. One should consult the Photo cuts series for an idea of the breadth of performers, actors, athletes, and other figures Globe has worked with throughout various part of history. Keep in mind that people featured in the cuts were active as far back as the 1930s and 1940s and therefore may not be featured on posters in this collection’s posters, which mostly only feature from artists from the 1960s through 2000s with a few exceptions.

Separated Materials

Some posters have been removed from their original location and are part of the Teaching collection series. Please review the Teaching collection series for more information.
