Series 9: M-Project records, 1929-1949

 Series

Scope and Contents

The materials in this series mainly include papers relating to or produced from the M-Project: the subject files and research materials of the project; the draft reports; Bowman's own internal research files on the scientific study of settlement; and the official final reports produced from the M-Project itself, also known as "Studies of Migration and Settlement". The most substantive reports in this series come from the "Studies of Migration and Settlement." This series has materials originally owned by Henry Field, Isaiah Bowman, and other M-Project staff members. The series dates from 1929 to 1949, with the bulk of the material created in the late 1930s to 1940s. Abstracts of most reports are in Field's history of the M-Project in Box 9-6. It is best to consult the abstracts before requesting the items.

When it concluded, Field had his files of the project shipped to Bowman. The purpose of the M-Project was to study areas of the world that might be suitable for resettling refugees of World War II.
