Yiddish sheet music, 1898 - 1918
Scope and Contents
Rewritten from dealer description:
This series includes eight examples of late 19th and early 20th century Yiddish sheet music, all four to six pages in length, some including lyrics in German, Yiddish, or both. The songs are instrumental, including popular folk songs and classical or opera selections, all published in New York City, several with Art Nouveau-inspired cover artwork. Several of these selections likely originated in the field of Yiddish theater, which thrived in Lower Manhattan from the 1880s into the mid-twentieth century. The publishers of this music specialized in Jewish music, ranging from popular folk songs to sacred hymns to instrumental pieces.
