"A Princess of Fiji" handwritten draft, approximately 1892
Scope and Contents
This item is a handwritten draft of Churchill's novel, A Princess of Fiji, a book that was published in 1892. As seen on the cover piece, an early title for the work was "Finau: The Story of a Savage." "Finau" likely refers to a title associated with a certain Tongan hereditary dynasty of leaders. It is written from the perspective of a man of European descent, recounting his interaction with the Fijian or Tongan culture 50 years before, telling of his adventures and how the experience changed his life. The draft also includes a small notebook, describing the novel's chapter outline.
