Scope and Contents note

From the Series:

This series contains incoming letters and some carbons of outgoing letters. They are filed alphabetically by correspondents. The letters deal with Eugster's professional work, especially research, consulting, field, and student work. This is a general file, and correspondence is found in all other series as well. For example, correspondence between Eugster and a co-author of an article might be found in Series 5 under the title of the article or in this series under the co-author's name. Letters about conferences are usually in the Conference series 3 ; field work correspondence in series 2, and routine grants correspondence in series 8. Because there is a great deal of overlap between the type of letters field in this general series and those filed elsewhere, it is best to check several series to be certain all related letters have been found.

The correspondence in this series is largely from Eugster's colleagues. He kept in contact with people at his alma mater the Eidgenossische Technische Hochschule and considered taking a position there in 1970. There is a great deal of correspondence between Eugster and Ken Hsu, F. Laves, Paul Niggli, and William Gunter. Eugster also kept in touch with his colleagues at the University of Wyoming including William Gunter, Robert S. Houston, Kenneth Perry, Ronald Surdam, and E-An Zen. Between research trips to Kenya, Eugster corresponded with several people in the Magadi area including Walter Rouse, John A Stevens, Jack Whittaker, and Peter Williamson.

Other colleagues with whom Eugster frequently corresponded include A.E. Beswick, Conrad Burri, Ian S.E. Carmichael, Hans Fuchtbauer, Robert M. Garrels, Richard L. Hay, Harold G. Helgeson, Vernon J. Hurst, G. Evelyn Hutchinson, Hans R. Katz, Teunis Kwak, William S. MacKenzie, Gilbert Maglione, Charles Milton, Francois Risacher, Malcolm Rutherford, Werner Schreyer, R.A. Sheppard, George I. Smith, Springer-Verlag, Aaron Waters, William S. Wise, David R. Wones, and Jim Wood.
