Scope and Contents note

From the Series:

Wintner had an extensive collection of his colleagues' reprints. Almost all the files are reprints, but occasionally there will be manuscript material by Wintner or the author attached to the reprint. The reprints were separated into four different alphabetical arrangements by Wintner, and this order has been retained.

The largest number of reprints deal with various aspects of analysis, especially differential equations. Especially well-represented are the work of: R. Baer, G.D. Birkhoff, R.P. Boas, H.Bohr, F. Bureau, S.S. Chern, J.Dieudonn‚, G. Doetsch, Albert Einstein, Paul Erdos, J. Favard, K.O. Friedrich, G.H. Hardy, Philip Hartman, J. Hadamard, E.K. Haviland, Borge Jessen, E.R. von Kampen, J. Karamata, H.Lebesgue, T. Levi-Civita, Paul L‚vy, A.M. Liapounoff, Marston Morse, J. von Neumann, Alexander Ostrowski, O. Perron, G. Polya, T. Rad¢, L.A. Santal¢, Erwin Schroedinger, I. Schur, Carl L. Siegel, O. Szasz, J.L. Walsh, Andre Weil, Hermann Weyl, and Norbert Wiener.

The second group of reprints separated by Wintner deal directly with celestial mechanics and include the work of G.D. Birkhoff, K. Bohlin, G.W. Hill, and Elis Stroemgren.

The third group of reprints appear to be on topics of peripheral interest to Wintner and include non-mathematical topics such as the work of close friend and chemist Joseph E. Mayer and romance language scholar Leo Spitzer. Other people whose work is well-represented include Maurice Frechet, Leon Ehrenpreis, Nathan Jacobson, Frank Murnaghan, M.H. Martin, G. Mittag-Leffler, Carl Stormer, and Anna Granville Hatcher.

The last set of reprints are those collected by Richard Dedekind (1831-1916) a German mathematician known for his work on algebraic numbers and functions. The reprints (about 100) are largely those by G. Frobenius with some by Felix Klein and others. There is also a copy of Dirichlet's 'Sur Les Integrales Euleriennes' in which Dedekind took notes (1856, 1857) and a copy of J.P. Gram's Maengden af Primital (1884).
