The fourth series represents documents pertaining to specific research and training grants administered by the Office from 1957 to 1985. Types of records include applications and proposals, budgets, contracts, correspondence, financial reports, progress reports, reports of inventions, reports on the use of government property, and project summary sheets. The project files were arranged under a variety of headings -- by the principal investigator's name, by university budget number, by sponsoring agency, or by university department -- and the original order has been maintained wherever it was ascertainable. The series has been divided into five subseries: (1) Terminated, (2) Retired, (3) Rejected, (4) Budget Number, and (5) Terminated Restricted. The significance of these divisions is not apparent, since there is little apparent difference either in the types of records in each subseries, or the projects they cover. A few breaks in the sequence exist, suggesting that the series is incomplete.
