John Mawe

John Mawe (1764-1829) was a British mineralogist who became known for his practical approach to the discipline. Initially a mason by trade, he became a mineralogist, setting up mineral shops in Derbyshire and London, as well as going on expeditions for the Portuguese crown in Brazil. One of these shops Mawe set up was likely a "Free Museum" in Matlock Bath. He wrote several books on mineralogy and his adventures, but is known for his primary work, Travels in the Interior of Brazil (1812).
