Content Description

The clothbound volume contains a series of handwritten essays, short stories, and German to English translations by E. M. Cope. On the spine is the title, "Target Papers," in gold lettering. The title page, handwritten in ink, reads: "Contributions to the Target by E. M. Cope, temp. Ed VII." Entries include The Cirimiri Family; Savonarola; Cervantes; "Lay Down Your Arms" by Bertha von Suttner; Will versus Will and the Result; Zachur with the Sack (An Allegorical Tale) (translation); Some Characteristics of the Poets of the Last Century; War and Dumplings (translated passage from Friedrich der Grosse und sein Hof by L. Mühlbach); Dictionaries and Glossaries; The White Lady (translated passage from Friedrich der Grosse und sein Hof by L. Mühlbach); Books and Reading; A Singular Duel (translation); and The Origin of English Literature. Cope's translation of Zachur with the Sack by Wilhelm Fischer was published in the children's magazine, Aunt Judy’s Christmas Volume for 1879, ed. H. K. F. Gatty (London, 1879), pp. 363-371. Entries are signed "Doronicum" or E. M. C..

Biographical / Historical

E. M. Cope may be the translator of Norwegian works by Clara Tschudi (1856-1945). The creator is not to be confused with Edward Meredith Cope (1818-1873), classicist and Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge.
