James Barnett Goodwillie scrapbook

 Collection — Box: 1
Identifier: MS-0165

Scope and Contents

The scrapbook which forms this collection is one bound volume; most of the material is undated, but known dates span from the 1890s to 1919. Some items inserted loosely in the scrapbook have been removed and placed in a folder. Written inside the cover is "J.B. Goodwillie, Xmas/87."

The scrapbook contains mostly newspaper clippings: poems, anecdotes, reports in which Goodwillie or Barnett family members are named, and several descriptions of society weddings in Cleveland, Ohio. A few postcards, tickets, programs, and photographs are also included. Most of the material is undated.

J.B. Goodwillie attended the University School in Cleveland, Ohio and played on their football team (1890). Several clippings report on the team's efforts for that season. Other articles mention James A. Barnett, Goodwillie's grandfather who served in the Civil War. In later years, Barnett was prominent in commercial and benevolent movements in Cleveland. Also in the scrapbook are descriptions of weddings attended by J.B. Goodwillie, Harriet, and Mary C. Goodwillie.

It is possible that the scrapbook was begun by J.B. Goodwillie and eventually, added to by Mary C. Goodwillie. The final items include a report of the retirement of Thomas Goodwillie from the Standard Oil Company in Baltimore and an obituary of Thomas Hodges who died at the Goodwillie home in Baltimore, 1919.

Biographical Note on the Goodwillie Family

J.B. (James Barnett) Goodwillie was born approximately 1874 and was a resident of Cleveland, Ohio. He was the grandson of James A. Barnett. Barnett was chief of artillery under General William S. Rosecrans, Army of the Ohio, during the Civil War. At the time of his discharge, Barnett was made a brevet brigadier general. J.B. Goodwillie attended the University School, Cleveland Ohio, in 1890. Presumably, J.B. Goodwillie was the son of Thomas Goodwillie and the brother of Mary C. and Harriet Goodwillie. Mary C. (1870-1949) and Harriet Goodwillie spent their early years in Cleveland. They came to Baltimore in 1898 when their father, Thomas Goodwillie, was transferred by the Standard Oil Company. Harriet married Thomas Hodges, an agent for the American Railroad Association. Mary C. Goodwillie was very active with volunteer organizations in Baltimore and served for many years as president of the Friends of the Library, The Johns Hopkins University. It is known that James A. Barnett was the grandfather of J.B. and also of Mary C. and Harriet Goodwillie.
