Horstmeier Family scrapbook

 Collection — Box: 1
Identifier: MS-0166

Scope and Contents

The scrapbook (1855-1863) which forms this collection is one bound volume. The volume itself is a copy of Commerce and Navigation, 1849-1850, in which clippings have been fastened over the published pages. Each page of the volume has been carefully covered with assorted clippings, and no indication of the preparer is given. The only personal comment within the scrapbook is a holographic annotation to a clipping which describes a soldier's death. The note places the incident at the home of Dr. William Taylor after the Battle of Gettysburg. It is not clear whether a member of the Horstmeier family assembled the scrapbook.

The scrapbook contains clippings of poems and prose removed from newspapers and most likely assembled during the Civil War period. No actual reporting of the progress of the war is given. However, there are stories and anecdotes associated with the emotions aroused by the conflict. Other articles deal with the more general topics of home life, patriotism, faith, and romance.

Biographical Note

The Horstmeier family resided in the Boston, Massachusetts area in the 1890s. Albert Horstmeier was a portrait painter. In 1896, he wrote to Professor Basil Gildersleeve concerning a proposed commission to paint Gildersleeve's portrait. It is likely that Meta Ernestine Horstmeier, who attended summer sessions of the University (1921, 1922), was also a member of the Horstmeier family.
