Scope and Contents

The collection consists of three notebooks from courses Steiner attended at Hopkins. The material covered includes lectures by Daniel Coit Gilman on charities, Elgin Ralston Lovell Gould on the family, Woodrow Wilson on the administration of the state, and an unnamed lecturer on English philology. Gilman's lectures on charities were presented to a social science course in 1888-1889. Gould's lectures were also part of the social science course that year, and Steiner's notes are the only known record of his remarks. Gould was a well-known social reformer; his lectures clearly outline his beliefs. Woodrow Wilson was a lecturer at Hopkins from 1887-1898. Two of the notebooks contain notes on Wilson's lectures; the third contains notes on Gilman's, Gould's and the lecture on English philology.

Biographical Note

Bernard Christian Steiner was born in Connecticut. He attended Yale University, receiving his A. B. in 1888. In 1889 he entered the graduate program at The Johns Hopkins University, and was granted the Ph.D. in history in 1891. Steiner went on to become the librarian of the Enoch Pratt Free Library (1892-1896) and the dean of the Baltimore Law School (1900-1904). He died in Baltimore in 1926.

Bernard Christian Steiner a graduate student at Johns Hopkins University. The collection consists of three notebooks from courses Steiner attended at Hopkins in 1888-1890. The material covered includes lectures by Daniel Coit Gilman on charities, Elgin Ralston Lovell Gould on the family, and Woodrow Wilson on the administration of the state.

Provenance

The three notebooks were found among the papers of Kent Roberts Greenfield (MS.0022), a member of the history faculty. It is not known how they became integrated into the Greenfield papers. They were removed, and became a collection in their own right in 1988.

Minutes from lectures in the Herbert Baxter Adams Papers (MS.0004) complement Steiner's notes. The Elgin Ralston Lovell Gould Collection (MS.0085) consists of scrapbooks which document Gould's career.
