Wilhelm Braune lectures
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of one bound holographic volume containing three lectures given by German philologist, Wilhelm Braune at the University of Leipzig, 1876-1877. (Neue Deutsche Biographie lists 1877 as Professor's Braune's appointment at Leipzig, but the manuscript suggests that he presented lectures before that time.)
The lectures are written in German and are not translated. The lectures were most likely recorded by Rudolf Kögel (appears as Koegel in later publications) (1855-1899) whose signature appears in the front of the volume and who would have been completing his graduate studies at Leipzig at that time. The subject of Kögel's dissertation (1878), was Old High German language, and his work was later published in 1879: Ueber das Keronische Glossar: Studien zur althochdeutschen Grammatik.
The manuscript includes the bookplate of Julius Kaiser Hofmann (1865-1928), philologist and assistant professor of German, The Johns Hopkins University. He also served as pastor of Zion Church, Baltimore, MD. Hofmann studied both theology and philology at the University of Giessen where he was a student of Professor Braune.
In the volume, the first lecture of Wilhelm Braune is 54 pages in length and was presented in the summer semester, 1876. It is titled "Geschichte der Niederdeutsche Sprache und Literatur nebst Erklärung des Heliand" (History of the Low German Speech and Literature, and an explanation of the Heliand). The second lecture is only 8 pages, and the first two pages are missing. The third lecture, presented winter semester 1876/1877, is titled "Althochdeutsche Grammatik" (Old High German Grammar). This lecture was published in an extended form in Braune's principal work on German Grammar: Althochdeutsche Grammatik. A fourteenth edition of this work was published in 1987 by Niemeyer in Tübingen.

Biographical Note
Wilhelm Braune was born in Grossthiemig, Sachsenberg, Germany February 2, 1850. He studied at the University of Leipzig with the noted German philologist, Friedrich Karl Theodor Zarncke (1825- 1891). Braune later taught at the University of Leipzig, [1877- 1880] and the University of Giessen, 1880-1888, before joining the faculty at the University of Heidelberg, 1888-1912. Together with other noted German philologists, Eduard Sievers (1850-1932) and Hermann Paul (1846-1921), Braune developed a new school in German philology stressing speech and speech history. The three philologists founded a journal, Beitrage zur Geschichte der Deutsche Sprache und Literatur which is still in publication. Wilhelm Braune died in Heidelberg, November 10, 1926.
