Scope and Contents

The collection consists of genealogical material collected by British demographer Thomas Henry Hollingsworth, for his study of the British peerage, 1603-1938. There are about 37,000 punched cards containing data on the birth, marriages, deaths and children of English, Scottish and Irish peers. Information was gathered on about 28,000 individuals. Copies of Hollingsworth's handwritten index sheets are also included. The data formed the basis for Hollingsworth's published demographic studies of British nobility.

Biographical Note

Thomas Henry Hollingsworth was a British demographer. He was born in Ealing, England, May 10, 1932. He studied at Cambridge University and received the Ph.D. from the London School of Economics in 1963. Hollingsworth has been an advisor to the United Nations on population studies and a professor of demography at Glasgow University. He is the author of "The Demography of the British Peerage" (1964) and "A Demographic Study of the British Ducal Families" (1967).
