Scope and Contents

This collection primarily consists of Walter's works of fiction, with materials concentrated into two time periods: from 1937-1957, and 1970-1971. The collection includes short stories, poems, and three typewritten works of fiction in novel form. His university papers, two personal diaries, and an account of his political campaign complete the collection.

Biographical / Historical

Jean Evans Walter was born in Baltimore in 1920. He attended Baltimore City College and later the Johns Hopkins University where he received his degree in 1945. He suffered from several physical limitations which prevented military involvement in 1942 and again, with the Foreign Service, in 1954.

He eventually moved from Baltimore to Washington, DC. By 1958 he resided in Takoma Park, MD. Walter made a career working in insurance sales and adjustments, yet he attempted to become politically involved in 1970 by running for a seat on the Prince George’s County Council.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The collection was a bequest to the Tudor and Stuart Literary Club at Johns Hopkins University from Jean Evans Walter in 1999. Steve Newman, curator of the Tudor and Stuart Club, forwarded the collection to the Special Collections department of the Johns Hopkins University.
