Scope and Contents

The book contains original drawings, magazine pictures and illustrations related to German writer, artist, and politician Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The images depict his life and work in Frankfurt and, in the late 18th century, in Weimar, where he managed a theater with his dramatist, historian, and philosopher friend Friedrich Schillerz. It also includes the publication of an illustrated obituary in 1832.

Biographical / Historical

Theodore Marburg was a member of a very prominent mercantile family in Baltimore. He attended Johns Hopkins University from 1880-1881 and became an author, art collector and founding member of the Municipal Art Society in Baltimore. He was also an ambassador to Belgium from 1912-1914 and an advocate for peace before and after World War I.

The items are not posted in chronological order, but are somewhat arranged by topic. For instance, two similar images would be placed together on the same page.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The scrapbook with clippings related to Goethe and Schiller were gathered from by the custodian of the Goethe House in Frankfurt. In 1887, art colector Theodore Marburg bought the book and donated to Johns Hopkins University in 1832.
