Most of the articles date from 1881 to 1899 and encompass a wide variety of subjects. A few interesting clippings include the scandal over Democratic presidential candidateGrover Cleveland's illegitimate child and his relationship with a woman of "intemperate habits"; the unveiling of the Boston monument to the Negro soldiers of the 54th and 55th Massachusetts regiments under the comand of Col. Robert Shaw; the health of Pope Leo XIII and his possible successor; Girard College and the life of Stephen Girard; Confederate assets in Europe; the sale of Washington's letters and relics at auction; the Monroe Doctrine; the consular service of the United States; spirit rappings and seances of the Fox sisters of Rochester; the trial of Professor Briggs for heresy by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian church; renovations made to the old State House of Independence Hall; an obituary of the eccentric New York millionaire Joseph Richardson; the life of children in Victorial England; the organizing of a regiment by John Wanamaker for use in the Spanish-American War; and the stopping of the Philadelphia City Hall clock at 1:49pm on New Year's Eve, 1899, because of mechanical problems.
