Biographical / Historical

The approximate date of this scrapbook, 1900, derived from the articles, dated from 1881 to 1899. These clippings offer interesting details about this period through the news coverage of everyday events, such as obituaries, court cases, auctions and the unveiling of monuments. They reveal an effort to find a common public memory post-Civil War, the mood during the Spanish-American War and evidences of urbanization and development in the late 19th century due to technological innovations and economic transformations.

Physical Description

Library half leather, rebacked with library cloth, over marbled paper boards, front and back covers pressure-stamped by a now defunct library, spine with paper shelving label and a heavily soiled cloth title label lettered "Scott Scrap Book vol. 4". Binding soiled and worn. Four final leaves loosening. Ex-library, with perforation stamp and library charge pocket. Several leaves chipped. By no means pretty, but interesting to page through, as there was a lively shaping mind in play here.
