Sarah L. Hawkes autograph album

 Series — Box: BW-3, Folder: 1
Identifier: MS-0679

Scope and Contents

Copied from dealer's description: "Civil War period autograph album kept by Sarah Louise Hawkes (1844-1899) of Manchester. Maine. She was the daughter of Winslow and Lydia McLellan Hawkes and the grand-daughter of General James McLellan (1777-1854), a prominent Bath, Maine merchant and shipbuilder. The album was kept more for collecting autographs rather than as a poetical or sentimental friendship album. There are some more elaborate sentimental inscriptions, but these are typically brief. Two of the inscriptions refer to temperance: one by Isabel C. Hamilton, State Organizer of the Women's Christian Temperance Union of Springfield, Massachusetts, and another by S. F. Pearson of Windham Center and Portland, Maine which begins "Remember Prohibition." Pearson was a clergyman in Portland, the pastor of the Gospel Temperance Mission. The autographs in the album are predominantly by women and come from the New England States of Maine, New Hampshire , Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. The dates in the autograph album primarily clustered around the Civil War era, 1860-1864 or from the 1880s. One of the former group includes the autograph and inscription of "Albert E. Kingsley Co. 'K' 29th Maine. Veteran Volunteers ." A Marie Louis Morrell also autographs and dates 1864 and signs off as being of San Francisco. Hawkes family members, also from Manchester, Maine, who signed the album include I. Warren Hawkes, Sarah S. Hawkes, Alfred W. Hawkes, and E. S. Hawkes. Three of the autograph inscriptions are accompanied by illustrations dedicated to Sarah L. Hawkes. One is a simple scroll design, another depicts two birds holding a banner in their beaks and the third, quite appropriately, an inkwell and quill pen. The gilt device to the upper board likewise images an inkwell, quill pen and shows a book of Autographs (so spine-lettered) adjacent."
