Biographical / Historical

Mary Catherine Walker, 1911-2011, was an active part of the Peabody Institute community for decades. She attended the Peabody Preparatory, earning her Peabody Teacher’s Certificate in piano. She then went on to study piano with Elizabeth Coulson and voice with Fraser Gange at the Conservatory. She graduated from Peabody in 1934 and started her career as a piano teacher and secretary.

Walker returned to Peabody in 1942 to work as a secretary in the Peabody Conservatory Office. In 1967, after 25 years in the Conservatory Office, she was appointed as the first Director of Alumni Relations. She retired in 1976, after 34 years of devoted service to Peabody. At her retirement dinner she was honored by Peabody for her knowledge, ability, understanding and sincerity, as well as her famous wit and charm. In 1982, The Johns Hopkins University Alumni Association presented her with the Heritage Award. When she moved to the Edenwald Retirement Community, she became the Music Chairman for that facility. Throughout her life she also supported Peabody philanthropically. She funded both of Peabody’s alumni directories and contributed toward the alumni newsletter. She set up an endowment to support the archives so that Peabody’s history would not be lost.
