Scope and Contents

The Henrietta Baker Low papers (1900-1950) contain four type-written essays authored by Low outlining her experience with the music education program at Peabody and Baltimore schools; a booklet listing standard junior and senior high curricula among various schools within Baltimore; a letter describing Low's work teaching singing in the schools and at the Peabody Preparatory; and scores of her song "Goodnight Little Baby."

Biographical / Historical

Henrietta Baker Low was a organist, teacher, and director in Baltimore. Having grown up with a love of music, Low initially began her professional career teaching math and English at Baltimore public schools. She was passionate about music and giving children the opportunity to study music in school. From 1904 to 1914, Low was the Assistant Director of Music as well as the Director of Music for Baltimore Public Schools. She then became the head of the Department of School Music at the Peabody Conservatory from 1914 to 1940. Low had a large impact on the Peabody community, establishing music teacher education courses. She was also instrumental in establishing a program in conjunction with Baltimore Public Schools, offering secondary students a means of studying music at the Conservatory. Low was also a national chairperson and 1912-1913 president of the Music Educators National Conference.

Abstract

Henrietta Baker Low was instrumental in establishing the music teacher education program at the Peabody Conservatory. Her papers contain personal essays and a letter describing her work, a pamphlet outlining public school curricula in Baltimore, and musical scores of her song "Goodnight Little Baby."
