Biographical / Historical

Stefans Grové (1922-2014) was a South African composer who wrote in a variety of genres and incorporated traditional African musical elements into his later works. He studied at the College of Music in Cape Town with William Henry Bell and Erik Chisholm.

In 1953 Grové became the first South African to be awarded a Fulbright Scholarship, which allowed him to obtain a master’s degree at Harvard University, studying with Walter Piston. He also studied with Aaron Copland at Tanglewood. Grové taught music theory and composition at the Peabody Conservatory from 1956 to 1972, where one of his students was the musicologist Ray Sprenkle. After returning to South Africa, he taught at the music department of the University of Pretoria from 1973 to his retirement in 1987.
