Scope and Contents

Collection contains records from 1911 to 1941, including correspondence concerning the Gallery of Art, exhibitions sponsored by the Charcoal Club, and the Rinehart School of Sculpture, deposited with the executive secretary by Lawrason Riggs, chairman of the art committee; minutes of the trustees' executive committee and Conservatory of Music committee meetings; institute financial records; correspondence concerning the Conservatory of Music and its Preparatory Department; and the lecture series.

Biographical / Historical

The position of Peabody Institute provost was abolished in 1911 and replaced by that of the executive secretary, who served under the trustees' executive committee and assumed many of the provost's responsibilities. The institute's librarian, Louis H. Dielman, served in this post from 1911 until his retirement in 1942, after which the position was dissolved.

Abstract

The position of Peabody Institute executive secretary existed from 1911 to 1941 and was a successor to the provost, who served under the trustees' executive committee. Records in this collection include the following: correspondence concerning Gallery of Art exhibitions (1911-1928), including an exhibition in conjunction with the National Star Spangled Banner Centennial exhibition in 1914; correspondence concerning the Rinehart School of Sculpture of the Maryland Institute; minutes of Executive and Conservatory of Music Committee meetings (1912-1921); general and summer session financial information (1912-1937); and a list of exhibition works in the Gallery of Art (approx. 1912).
