Abstract Basil Lanneau Gildersleeve (October 23, 1831 – January 9, 1924), was a "classicist and Confederate apologist" (David Lupher and Elizabeth Vandiver, "Yankee She-Men and Octoroon Electra: Basil Lanneau Gildersleeve on Slavery, Race, and Abolition," 320), and one of the first faculty members hired at the founding of Johns Hopkins University in 1876. Herman Louis Ebeling (1857-1945) was a classics scholar and Johns Hopkins University alumnus. The collection consists of student notebooks from his graduate and undergraduate studies at Johns Hopkins University and a small amount of correspondence from his teaching career at Goucher College. The collection spans 1886-1927.
