Saussine Joan of Arc lotto game, 1910

 Item — Box: 26, Folder: 3

Scope and Contents

The lotto game produced by Saussine Éditeur in 1910 consists of four uncut chromolithographed sheets. The cover sheet would have been affixed to the lid of the box, which is not included in the file. It reproduces a wall painting of Joan of Arc at the Siege of Orléans by Jules Eugène Lenepveu, dated 1886-90 and located in the north transept of the Pantheon in Paris. There are twelve lotto cards, each with a captioned illustration and eight numbers. Spread over two sheets of six, the lotto cards illustrate scenes from the life of Joan of Arc, from her vision of the archangel Michael in 1425, to her meetings with Robert de Baudricourt and Charles VII and her victory at Orléans in 1429, to her capture, trial, and martyrdom in 1430-31. Numbers one through ninety appear on the fourth sheet against a green background.

Biographical / Historical

Born in 1412, Joan of Arc was a young girl from Domrémy in Lorraine, who believed she was chosen by God to lead the French to victory in the Hundred Years’ War against the English. She was given an army by Charles VII and is credited with breaking the siege of Orléans. She was captured by the Burgundians, English allies, in 1430, put on trial for witchcraft, and executed in 1431 at the age of nineteen. The lotto game was produced shortly after her beatification by Pope Pius X in 1909. She was canonized by Pope Benedict XV in 1920.
