Scope and Contents

The scrapbook contains photographs, news clippings, brochures, and other ephemera from the Bondu's Bon-Adventure Eastern Airlines Golf Tournament, an all-inclusive amateur golf tournament organized by Dave and Mayme Bondu and John B. Taylor, with sponsorship from Eastern Airlines. The tournament took place at the Ruby and Emerald Golf Courses at the King's Inn in Freeport, Grand Bahama from Febrary 5-9, 1974.

Biographical / Historical

David (Dave) and Mayme Bondu were a married couple who each held respsective careers in journalism, radio broadcasting, and event planning, primarily in Atlanta and Miami from the 1940s through the 1970s. The Bondus worked with Jack Gibson as radiohosts for WERD, the first Black-owned radio station in the United States in Atlanta, Georgia, and were known on air as "Mr. and Mrs. Swing." In later years, Dave wrote a column for the Miami Times and Mayme worked as a Public Relations Agent for the city of Miami. The Bondus also invented a specially designed golf shirt called "The Mightee Flightee" intended to improve driving distance.
