Photographs of Black Panther Party members following court verdicts, 1968 - 1971
Scope and Contents
Four black and white photographs of Black Panther Party members as they react to court verdicts, along with information about their cases. In three of the photographs, the people pictured were acquitted of their charges, while the fourth resulted in a prison sentence and a fine.
The first photograph, from May 22, 1968, shows H. Rap Brown holding his wife Lynn Doswell's hand after receiving a verdict of a five-year sentence, which he would serve at Attica, and a $2000 fine for a conviction of violating the Federal Firearms Act. The second photograph shows Huey P. Newton on May 29, 1970 after the California Appellate Court reversed his 1968 manslaughter conviction for killing a police officer and ordered a new trial. The third photograph shows Lee Roper hugged by an unidentified woman after his May 13, 1971 acquittal in a case in which he and 12 other Black Panthers were accused of attempted murder against two police officers and conspiracy to bomb police stations and department stores. The fourth photograph shows Curtis Powell and Joan Bird hugging on May 13, 1971 after being acquitted in the same case as Lee Roper.
