Scope and Contents

This poster consists of an original hand-drawn cartoon by cartoonist Ray Evans, circa 1913. The top half of the drawing depicts two women from the shoulders up holding up papers which read, "Sound Reasons Why Women Should Vote" and "Equal Suffrage Arguments." The bottom half depicts women's feet marching next to a sign reading, "To Washington." Pencilled above the image is the caption "Some use their heads," with the rest of the caption, "others their feet," pencilled below the rest of the image.

The cartoon was likely drawn by Evans in 1913, around the time of the first national women's suffrage parade in Washington, DC.

Biographical / Historical

Raymond Oscar Evans (1887-1954) was a political cartoonist for the Columbus Dispatch whose work was circulated in newspapers across the United States. Born in Columbus, OH, he graduated from Ohio State University in 1910 and subsequently began working at the Columbus Dispatch as an advertising artist and then at the Dayton News as a cartoonist. From 1913-1923, he worked as a political cartoonist for the Baltimore American, returning to the Columbus Dispatch in 1923, where he would remain for the rest of his career. He also worked as a staff artist for the Baltimore News from 1921-1922, contributed to Life and Puck, and taught cartooning at the Maryland Institute of Fine and Applied Arts (now called the Maryland Institute College of Art, or MICA).
