Scope and Contents

The collection consists of 28 lectures on contemporary American and English drama presented by Florence Lewis Speare at Johns Hopkins University dating from 1920 to 1921. The papers are in typescript with Mrs. Speare's hand-written annotations. The works of Eugene O'Neill, Anita Loos, George S. Kaufman, Henril Ibsen, and James M. Barrie are among those represented. Final items include biographical information and some letters of her husband, M. Edmund Speare, regarding the collection and dating to 1967.

Biographical Note

Florence Lewis Speare was a playwright and lecturer at The Johns Hopkins University. She was born in Brookline, Mass, April 9, 1886, studied at Radcliffe College, and later married author and Hopkins Alumnus, M. Edmund Speare in 1915. During 1920-1921, Speare was a lecturer in the Department of English at Hopkins where she presented a series of lectures on modern American and English drama and dramatists. Her published plays include "The Demonstrator," “The Lady with the Lamp," and "The Extra Girl." Florence Lewis Speare died in Washington D.C., on May 3, 1965.
