Traite Du Commerce Du Fourrures manuscript

 Collection — Box: 1
Identifier: MS-HUT-028

Scope and Contents

Collection consists of a French treatise on the fur trade from approximately the late 1830s. Organized by chapter headings, the first 38 pages cover origins of usage; the historical development of the traffic in furs and its consequences - in Canada and the United States especially, from the 17th century to the Lewis and Clark Expedition; also Siberia, Alaska and the Russian trade; price determination, grades, and various species of furs; preparation and finishing; and artificial imitations.

The remaining 20 pages are devoted to a more or less contemporary survey of all aspects of the international commerce in furs - including the problem of extinction due to increased consumption - with much on Russia as well as North America.
