Scope and Contents

The collection consists of research notes, lecture notes, correspondence, reprints, and drafts ranging in date from 1925 to 1971. Several lectures are in Portuguese and were presented by Murnaghan at the Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica, São José dos Campos, Brazil. Subjects include vector analysis, theory of elasticity, and tensor analysis.

Biographical Note

Francis D. Murnaghan was professor of mathematics at Johns Hopkins University from 1928 to 1949. He was born in Omagh, County Tyrone, Ireland in 1893. He studied at the National University of Ireland before coming to the United States in 1914. Murnaghan received his Ph.D. from Hopkins in 1916 and taught briefly at the Rice Institute. He returned to Hopkins in 1918 to teach in the mathematics department where he later served as chairman of the department. Murnaghan was appointed the first professor of mathematics at the Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica in Brazil where he lectured in both English and Portuguese from 1949 to 1959. His writings include "Vector Analysis and the Theory of Relativity" (1922) and "Theoretical Mechanics" (1929). Francis D. Murnaghan died in Baltimore, Maryland in 1976.
