Edmund Duffy cartoon collection
Scope and Contents
The collection consists largely of 1000 cartoons drawn by Duffy. They date from 1924 to 1956 but the bulk are from the 1930s and 1940s. The cartoons deal with World War II and its aftermath, U.S. relations with Europe, South America, Asia, and Africa as well as U.S. domestic issues such as local and national elections, civil rights, urban crime, labor problems, taxes and fiscal policies. Included also are some of Duffy's sketchbooks, cartoons presented to him by fellow cartoonists Daniel R. Fitzpatrick, Dorman H. Smith and Aaron Sopher, and a few financial records.

Biographical / Historical
Edmund Duffy (March 1, 1899 – September 12, 1962), was an American editorial cartoonist. He grew up in Jersey City, New Jersey. Duffy did not attend high school, but instead went into the Art Students League of New York. Duffy’s career took him London, Paris, New York, and finally to Baltimore where he spent the majority of his professional career working for The Baltimore Sun. Throughout his career Duffy won three Pulitzer Prizes for Editorial Cartooning in 1931, 1934, and the last one in 1940. Duffy began to work for the Baltimore Sun in 1924, when he was only about 25 years old, but he received high praise from the famous journalist, H.L. Mencken.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
The cartoons were donated by Duffy's family in 1967 and 1972.
