Derived from dealer description: This collection contains one 9.5 by 7.5 inch portrait photograph of Rupert Brooke. It was created in 1913. It is a vintage gelatin silver print, and was taken by the photographer Sherril Schell. The photograph features Brooke from the torso up, dressed in a tie and button down, looking at the camera with his head in his hand.

Biographical / Historical

Sherril Schell (1877–1964) was an American photographer. He shot twelve portraits of Rupert Brooke, one of which (a profile view with his shoulders bare) became quite famous, and was used as the frontispiece of his book 1914 and Other Poems.

Rupert Brooke (1887-1915) was an English poet most famous for his sonnets written at the beginning of World War I. After enlisting in the Royal Naval Division, he died in 1915 of blood poisoning from a mosquito bite. After his death, he "became a symbol in England of the tragic loss of talented youth during the war."
