Scope and Contents

The scrapbook was kept by Vesta M. Goodwin, a young woman who attended Central High School in Washington, DC and the Women's College of Delaware, University of Delaware. Her signature appears on the first page. Photographs, programs, souvenirs, and captions date from 1920 to 1921. Inserted into the scrapbook is an envelope with loose material from 1921: a program from a graduation ceremony at Acadia University, Nova Scotia, featuring her cousin, Jean Nielson Foote; photographs of the creator and her friends; views of Syracuse University and the University of Delaware. The notebook is lined and numbered with some pages cut out. Beginning on page 45, photographs are affixed with captions and short commentary. On page 55, a photograph of two girls dressed as Red Cross volunteers holding an American flag is captioned, "ghosts of the Flu." Ten pages later, recovery from an illness or accident is suggested by a page "Dedicated to All the Friends Who Were Nice to Me and Hoped I’d Soon Be Well When I was Enjoying (?) Myself in the Hospital and at Home." It is not known whether the hospital stay was related to the flu pandemic of 1918-19. Other printed material includes a football schedule for the 1920 season at Central High School, photographs from the National Mall on Inauguration Day 1921, a photograph of Mount Vernon, and a program from the commencement ceremony of Central High School in late January 1921.

Biographical / Historical

The scrapbook was kept by Vesta M. Goodwin, a young woman who attended Central High School in Washington, DC and the Women’s College of Delaware, University of Delaware. She was born in 1904 in Pennsylvania to Canadian parents. In 1926, she married Colonel Paul Earl Tombaugh in Cook County, Illinois. They are buried together in Arlington National Cemetery.
