This collection consists of a friendship album belonging to Catherine "Kate" Barnett of Boonsboro, Maryland, which was gifted to her by her cousin T. Newton Kurtz, a Baltimore bookseller, stationer, and publisher whose commercial embossed blind stamp appears on the front endpaper above his December 1851 inscription. The album was published in New York by J. C. Riker, and features an engraved frontispiece and eight engraved plates, alongside blank pages which are partially filled with poetic inscriptions from Kate's family and friends. Named family members include her sister Matilda Barnett, brother Otho M. Barnett (signed with initials O. M. B.), and cousins Mollie Kate Miller, L. M. M., and O. E. S.

Biographical / Historical

Catherine "Kate" Barnett of Boonsboro, MD was the daughter of Jacob Barnett (1781-1850) and Elizabeth Miller (1787-1851). According to Kate's uncle Daniel Miller's family bible, she was born on November 13, 1830. She had six known siblings, among them Otho (1815-1873) and Matilda (1824-1894).

Kate's cousin Theophilus Newton Kurtz (1822-1881) was the son of Reverend Benjamin Kurtz. His mother was Jacob Barnett's sister Ann Barnett. T. Newton Kurtz was a bookseller, stationer, and publisher in Baltimore at 151 Pratt St.
