William Benson Jr. notebook
Scope and Contents
The notebook (1865-1885) which forms this collection is a bound, holographic volume containing unpublished poetry and prose of William Benson, Jr. The notebook also contains passages from the Bible as well as poetry of Robert Browning, Edgar Allan Poe, and other writers. Two separate poems were placed in the volume: "A Tale of a Trumpet Hood," dated March 1870 and "My Poor Heart is Sad with its Dreaming" which is undated. Benson's poetry reflects a romantic, sentimental style appropriate to the late 19th century. A final item inserted into the notebook is a clipping, Saturday, February 12 (no year), from The Baltimorean announcing the marriage in Baltimore of John K. Messersmith and Florence Gibson, during which Dr. William Benson served as an usher.
