Ann Eliza Taylor friendship album

 Collection — Box: 1
Identifier: MS-1023

Content Description

This friendship album, which belonged to Ann Eliza Taylor of Baltimore and has her name stamped in gold on the cover, contains poems and other messages from Taylor's family and friends. Most are signed with initials, and a few appear to have been written by a child. A number of poems are from a G. W. Young. One poem at the beginning of the album from Taylor herself laments the death of her mother. Other transcribed poetry includes “America, My Country! ‘tis of thee” and a section described as from Bell's Mary Queen of Scots which has been illustrated with a pencil drawing of a pastoral landscape with a ruined church. A few other pages include gold or silver colored decorations adhered to the pages.

Included with the album is a transcription of the poem “First and Second Love,” first published in the July 1832 issue of Godey’s Lady’s Book. Taylor’s adaptation is dated August, 1837 and is titled “The Confession.”
