Victorian-style scrapbook

 Collection — Box: 1
Identifier: MS-1024

Content Description

This scrapbook contains die-cut chromolithographed Victorian-style scraps which have been pasted into the album. The cover of the album reads "scrap book" and the interior cover indicates that the album was patented on March 28, 1876. The contents are undated, except for one scrap near the end of the album which reads 1958. Pasted inside the back cover of the album is an envelope containing additional loose scraps.

Several names have been written in pencil at the beginning of the album beneath the pasted images and most have been erased. Only two names remain in the album: Agnes Buderbach and Selma (no surname listed). The handwriting appears childish, so the album may have been started as a child.

The scraps in the album include images of people (primarily in Victorian clothing), flowers, sentimental messages of love and hope, animals, pastoral scenes, holiday or seasonal themes, musical themes, and a few orientalist images.

Biographical / Historical

No information is known about the creator of this album. One name can be found in the album, Agnes Buderbach, although it is unclear whether she may have been the creator or a friend or relative of the creator.

There is an Agnes Buderbach of Lake County, Indiana who was born in 1871 and died in 1959. She married Stephen Russett in 1888. Because these birth and death dates correspond closely to the dates associated with this album, the processor believes that Agnes Buderbach Russett is likely the creator of this album.
