The scrapbook (1914) which forms this collection was assembled by Baltimore judge, Emory Hamilton Niles. Many of the items in the scrapbook are in German and reflect a brief but historically significant few months (July to November) leading up to World War I in 1914. The scrapbook contains tickets, postcards, photographs, and newspaper clippings collected in Europe prior to and immediately following the outbreak of World War I.

Tickets and photographs in the scrapbook indicate that Niles traveled from London to Amsterdam and Belgium in July, 1914. In August, Niles was in Germany as European hostilities escalated. Newspaper clippings report the mobilization for war. A circular is included from the American Consular Service which advised the evacuation of American citizens by September 19, 1914. Niles's daily calendar, July 23 to September 13, 1914, is included which describes the build-up of events in Europe. Included also are German postcards designed for propaganda purposes.

Soon after his return to Oxford, Niles apparently planned to travel to France. It is known that Niles served with the Ambulance Américaine in 1916. The final item in the scrapbook is a letter from the French Consul General in London, November 3, 1914, and allows that Niles could travel to Basle via Paris.

Biographical Note

Emory Hamilton Niles was Chief Judge, Supreme Bench of Baltimore, Maryland. He was born in Baltimore in 1892, and he received his B.A. from The Johns Hopkins University. He was selected as a Rhodes Scholar, Oxford University, and later received a law degree from the University of Maryland. While a student at Oxford in 1914, Niles left for a summer holiday and was delayed in Germany at the start of World War I. In 1916, he served with the Ambulance Américaine in France and with the U.S. Army, 1917- 1918, in France. Niles began practicing law in Baltimore in 1920, and was recognized as a distinguished member of the profession throughout his career. He became Associate Judge in 1938 and was Chief Judge, Supreme Bench, 1954-1962. He held several offices with the American Bar Association and the Maryland Bar Association. Niles served as editor of American Maritime Cases, 1923-1967 and United States Aviation Reports, 1928-1960. Emory Hamilton Niles died in 1976.
