Commonplace Book
Scope and Contents
This Commonplace book is a handwritten, bound manuscript of the late seventeenth century written in English. The recorder and exact date of the book are unknown. It was compiled after 1663 since an edition of Sir Francis Bacon's Essays published in that year is the last volume cited in a listing of authors on the final page. Writings from several authors, well-known for their thinking on government and military conduct, are included and arranged alphabetically. Among the authors cited in the commonplace book are : Count Galeazzo Priorato Gualdo (1606- 1678); Guido Bentivoglio (1577-1644); Arrigo Caterino Davila (1576- 1631); Francis Bacon (1561-1626); Johannes Sleidanus (1506-1556); Sir Robert Cotton (1571-1631); James Harrington (1611-1677); Richard Baxter (1615-1691), and Niccolò Machiavelli (1469-1527). Subjects in the Commonplace book include asking advice and counseling, battles, boasting, how to make a conquest of another country, fear, the way to procure friends, and how to deal with a vanquished enemy.
