Scope and Contents
Collection consists of one published poem (1968) of American poet, Conrad Aiken. The poem entiteled "A Clear, Brave, Civilizing Force" was Aiken's contribution to the committee of Arts and Letters for Humphrey. Aiken was a member of the committee during Hubert Humphrey's presidential campaign in 1968. The poem was originally printed in the "New York Times," July 21, 1968.

Biographical Note
Conrad Aiken was an American poet, novelist, and critic. He was born in Savannah, Georgia August 5, 1889 and recieved the A.B. from Harvard in 1912. Aiken was a contributer to major literary Journals including "The Dial," "Athenaeum," and the "London Mercury" and was the recipient of important writing awards including the Pulitzer Prize (1930); The National Book Award (1954); and the Bollingen Prize (1956). Aiken published short stories, novels, and editedd several anthologies of British and American Poetry. Collections of Aiken's Poetry were published between 1914 and 1977. Conrad Aien died August 17, 1973.
