Daniel Gordon essay
Scope and Contents
Collection consists of one bound copy of Daniel Gordon's essay which he completed to meet the requirements of the M.L.A. degree awarded from The Johns Hopkins University, 1991. The essay is entitled "The Robber Baron Archaeologist". Gordon's essay is on the life of the financier and Egyptologist, Theodore M. Davis. The early life, business dealings, and personal life of Davis are described as well as the many expeditions he financed and arranged to the Valley of the Kings, Egypt, from 1903 to 1909. Antiquities, paintings, and other art objects collected by David and his team later formed part of the Egyptian holdings of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Daniel Gordon was an alumnus of the Johns Hopkins University and a Baltimore attorney. He was born in Baltimore in 1920 and recieved the B.S. degree from Hopkins in 1940. Along with his legal career, Gordon pursued other scholarly interests. He recieved the M.A. degree from the Baltimore Hebrew College in 1974 where he completed his thesis entitled "The British Reaction to the Persecution of Russian Jewry, 1881-1882." Gordon continued his studies in liberal arts at Hopkins and was awarded the M.L.A. degree in 1991.
