William Dwight Pierce papers

 Collection
Identifier: MS-0434

Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of a folder of typed and mimeographed minutes, lecture notes and reports all produced for a class on the Entomology of Disease, Hygeine and Sanitation. These items are arranged roughly in chronological order; they are numbered 1-409 and remain in original order. The lecture notes are incomplete. Lectures 2-9 (pgs. 14-142) are missing, as well as lectures 11, 12, 13, 16, 17, 18, 21, 26 and 28. The remaining lectures, minutes and reports provide an outline of the weekly class structure and topics. This small collection paints a vivid picture of sanitary conditions in both civilian and military areas in the early 20th century, as well as a glimpse into the research and practical applications of entomological studies at the time.

Biographical Note

William Dwight Pierce, born in 1881, was one of the earliest students to graduate from the University of Nebraska's Department of Entomology and Ornithology.

Pierce led a class at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Bureau of Entomology during the Fall of 1918. In conjunction with several other entomology experts, he lectured on the control of insects through sanitary practices. The class featured lectures and reports made from site visits to military camps as well as the greater Washington area.

From 1904-1931, Pierce produced several works on insect study and pest control. The majority of these works were published by the Bureau of Entomology in Washington D.C. Pierce later taught entomology at Glendale Junior College in Los Angeles, CA during the late 1930s. While there, he mentored prominent California entomologist Charles Anthony Fleschner.
