Horatio Beauman Young papers

 Collection — Box: BW-9
Identifier: MS-0522

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of manuscript material, dating 1834-1850, written by Commander Horatio Beauman Young of the British Navy. The collection was created at a time when Britain had recently purchased several Danish settlements and Young emphasises the potential in the palm oil trade. The directions for boarding suspected slavers is of interest, outlining the protocols of conduct and revealing the methods used to detect the illegal cargo. The additional documentation, including certified copies of conventions signed with Portugal, France and Brazil, illuminate the wider efforts to suppress the slave trade in West Africa. Commander Horatio Beauman Young writes specifically of the direct correlation between the establishment of legitimate British trade and the extinction of slavery in that region.
