Richard A. Macksey collection on Henry James
Scope and Contents
This collection consists primarily of 22 letters written by Henry James, Jr. to friends and acquaintances, and the corrected typescript of Max Beerbohm’s short story “The Guerdon,” a 1916 parody of James’ late writing style.
It contains letters written by James to Margaret Gibbens, who was the sister of his sister-in-law Alice Gibbens James, the wife of his brother William James. Other letters in the collection are addressed to A. Ludovici, Mrs. Norman Forbes Robertson, Mrs. L. C. Jarvis, and Herbert Dunster. There is one undated letter from James’ father, Henry James, Sr., to Alice Gibbens, probably written before Alice married William James, Henry James, Jr.’s older brother.

He was the second child of Henry James (1811-1882), a theologian devoted to the teachings of Emmanuel Swedenborg, and Mary Robertson Walsh James (1810-1882). The family spent time in Europe and the United States.
