Scope and Contents

Collection consists of 47 diaries (1910-1956) of Baltimore resident, Margaret Donaldson Boehm; one diary (1883) of her father, G. Herbert Boehm; letters (1928-1951) of Henry Woodd Nevinson and his wife, Evelyn Sharp; and a copy of Miss Boehm's master's essay (1925), "The Conception of Pride in 17th and 18th Century Philosophy and Literature." Miss Boehm's diaries provide a detailed view of life in Baltimore during the first half of the twentieth century. Miss Boehm described her family life, shopping, cultural and social events, church attendance, health concerns, and the progress of her studies and intellectual pursuits. Her long devotion to the author, Henry Woodd Nevinson is apparent in her writings as well as in his letters to her.

Biographical / Historical

Margaret Donaldson Boehm was born in Baltimore, MD in 1894. She attended Roland Park Country School and later The Johns Hopkins University where she was a student of Arthur O. Lovejoy, professor of Philosophy. Miss Boehm received the M.A. degree in 1925, and for many years afterwards she typed the manuscripts of Professor Lovejoy. Her translation of Pierre Maine de Biran's "The Influence of Habit on the Faculty of Thinking" was published in 1929. Miss Boehm became an ardent admirer of the English journalist and author, Henry Woodd Nevinson, and their correspondence spanned 1928-1941. She also corresponded with Nevinson's wife, Evelyn Sharp until 1951. Margaret Donaldson Boehm died in 1956.
