John Hack correspondence
Scope and Contents
The contents of the letters include negotiation of prices, discussions of sales and quality of the products. One of the letters mentions that a check was included in the envelope and several acknowledge receiving shipments of Spanish Cigars and tobacco.

Biographical / Historical
This incoming correspondence dated 1826-1827 is addressed to John Hack, Merchant of Baltimore, and sent by New York merchants who purchased tobacco he produced. Around 1820s, tobacco was one the most traded products in Baltimore. An 1833 Baltimore directory registered a John Hack as a tobacco, cigar and snuff manufacturer at the N.E. corner of Howard and Lexington streets.
